Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important.

A. sanguinicola is found in human infections and is frequently identified in clinical samples from elderly female patients with urinary tract infections. A. sanguinicola is similar to A. urinae in clinical implication, as both were first described as causes of urinary tract infections ( 6 , 24 ) and then later found to be associated with bacteremia, sepsis, and endocarditis ( 4 , 12 ).

Aerococcus urinae can, in older males with underlying urinary tract conditions, cause invasive infections such as urosepsis or infective endocarditis. The prognosis of invasive aerococcal infections appears to be relatively favourable despite the old age of patients and their many comorbidities. A 4‐month' survey revealed 29 patients suspected of urinary tract infection (UTI), from whom an Aerococcus‐like organism (ALO) was isolated in significant numbers from urinary tract specimens and singly in 11 cases. Approximately 0.8% of all urinary tract specimens examined during the period yielded growth of ALO. This study looked at different treatments for urinary tract infections (UTIs – infection of the urethra or bladder) caused by aerococcus bacteria. The study found that nitrofurantoin (Macrobid), pivmecillinam (Selexid) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro) were effective antibiotic treatments for UTIs caused by aerococcus. Aerococcus: an increasingly acknowledged human pathogen.

In this study, we report 2 cases of urinary tract infection by Aerococcus sanguinicola. A descriptive clinical-microbiological study was conducted on the presence of A. sanguinicola causing urinary tract infections. The presence of A. sanguinicola occurred in elderly patients with previous urological disease and a significant count in urine obtained through bladder catheterization.

Aerococcus sanguinicola urinary tract infection

Species belonging to the Aerococcus genus are isolated from the urine and blood of elderly patients suffering from urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, the clinical significance, phenotypic features and antimicrobial susceptibilities of these underestimated and/or misidentified species remain unclear.

Aerococcus sanguinicola is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus and is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. This species was defined in 2001 and has since then been increasingly recognized as a pathogen causing urinary tract infections and also invasive infections including infective endocarditis.

Treatment options are therefore important. Thirty-one of 46 patients with A. sanguinicola and 45 of 57 patients with A. urinae isolated from the urine had a clinical diagnosis of urinary tract infection. One subject had A. sanguinicola isolated from blood cultures. A. sanguinicola and A. urinae had low ceftriaxone, penicillin, and vancomycin MICs. It is a rare cause of infections in humans, but cases of urinary tract infection (UTI), bacteraemia, endocarditis and meningitis have been reported .
