The Atrush Block is 269 square kilometres in area and has oil proven in Jurassic fractured carbonates in the Chiya Khere structure. The Atrush oil field, located near Dohuk approximately 85km northwest of Erbil, is one of the biggest new oil developments in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) holds a 47.4% stake and is the operator of the Atrush onshore oil-producing block, which covers 269km². Atrush, situated 45 miles from Iraq’s Turkish border, is one such camp. The camp’s inhabitants, some 14,000 Kurds – largely women, children and old men, face the prospect of once again losing their homes. On December 21, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees decided to disband Atrush camp.
The Atrush block is located north of the Shaikan discovery announced by Gulf Keystone Petroleum in early 2010 and the recent Bijeel oil discovery to the east, operated by Kalegran.
